Lead, Kindly Light

Kindly Light, acrylic on canvas

Lead on, kindly light
for my way is not clear
to eyes
looking for home in a land
not my own

How I would rejoice to see
an open door,
a candle in the window -
in my desire I can
almost feel its glow
on my cheek, on my brow

But now, I hear the call of
the wind, to come back to
this path, my feet, the road
and open my eyes again
Though there is a sharpness
to this winter air,
the briskness enlivens me

Open my eyes, kindly light
to see the hope scattered at
my feet, waiting
to be gathered in my arms,
lead on
